Ashington Town Council is pleased to announce that the popular gardens competition is to take place again this year. However, due to coronavirus restrictions the town council has taken a 'leaf' from the Chelsea Flower Show and will be running a ‘virtual competition’ this year.

The Ashington Gardens Competition is now open to all residents of the town and will be run on the submission of photographs or a short video of each garden. There will be four categories this year as follows: Large Garden; Small Garden; Allotment Garden or Kids Corner (for children / young people who look after part of a garden).

Business Chair of the Town Council, Cllr. Mark Purvis, said ‘Following the success of the Ashington Gardens Competition in recent years it was decided that it should go ahead again in 2020 albeit in a different format due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Garden Competition celebrates and recognises the excellent gardening work undertaken by many residents of our town'.

Town Clerk, Mike Slaughter, adds ‘Since the Town Council reintroduced the competition it has generated a real interest within the community to maintain and enhance the environment. We have watched the recent success of the virtual RHS Chelsea Flower Show and we are hopeful that residents will take part in the new format this year’.

The Town Council is delighted that the Wansbeck Garden Centre & Café, based on North Seaton Industrial Estate, and Ashington’s Wilkinson store are supporting the competition.

The Competition is now open for electronic entries, to arrive via email, to the Town Council by the closing date of Friday 24 July 2020. Photographic entries are to a maximum of 6 photos per entry with an accompanying description of no more than 100 words. Video entries must be no longer than one minute with audio or written description of no more than 100 words.

Dependent on social distancing regulations an Award’s Evening will be held later in the year when the winners will be announced. If the evening can’t take place the winners will still receive prizes that will include individual trophies and gardening vouchers.

Application forms can be downloaded below to be returned to the Town Council with the accompanying photographs or short video.
