Ashington Colliery Band have organised a concert as part of Ashington’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations.

The concert will also include North East soprano Susan Robertson who earlier this year was the guest singer at London’s New Year’s Day Parade.

The concert will take place on Sunday 29 October, at Northumberland YMCA on North View in the town (NE63 0XQ), commencing at 7.00pm.

The sinking of the Bothal Mine Shaft, in 1867, led to the rapid expansion of coal mining and development of Ashington. Ashington Colliery Band is rooted in the mining industry and it is only fitting that the Band celebrate this significant anniversary for the town with this Concert. The Band continue to represent Ashington around the country and will be leading the town’s Remembrance Day parade in November.

Newbiggin by the Sea born Susan Robertson’s performance at London’s New Year’s Parade was screened around the world, with an audience of almost 500 million people, and the Parade’s Spokesman hailed Susan’s performance as ‘terrific’. Susan also sang at the opening of the Ashington Colliery Heritage Trail in 2014 and she is delighted to be taking part in the Concert with the Band.

The Concert is part of a wide range of events that have taken place in 2017 to mark the 150th Anniversary led by Ashington Town Council and partners. There have been community clean ups, tree planting and musical performances as well as the recent placing of a Mining Wheel as an entrance feature to the town.

Tickets are now on sale for the Concert priced at £5. They are available from band members, Northumberland YMCA, Ashington Town Council (at Ashington Town Hall) and Al’s on Station Road.
