Ashington Town Council has responsibility of all maters relating to the provision of radar controlled speed awareness signs in the town.

The purpose of the signs is to slow traffic down by making drivers aware when they are driving at speeds above the legal limit. Speed is one of the main factors in road accidents and the difference of a few miles per hour can often mean the difference between life and death. The risk of death is approximately four times higher when a pedestrian is hit at 40mph than at 30mph.

In selecting locations for the signs the Town Council works closely with Northumberland County Council and Northumbria Police. There are currently twelve speed awareness signs placed around the town with a focus on school locations.

To report an issue with a speed awareness sign please call 01670 620 533 / 624 520 or email stephenhumphreyatc@gmail.com
