The Ashington Hirst Celebratory Outdoor Bowls Cup Competition took place on Sunday (8 September).
The competition commenced in 2017 when the three outdoor bowls clubs, operating in the town, started to share the bowling facilities at Hirst Park.
Members from the three clubs (Ashington, Alcan and Hirst Park) now take part in the annual competition, sponsored by Ashington Town Council.
The winners of the 2019 competition was the pairs team of Tony Whitelaw (Hirst Park Bowling Club) and Wally Ray (Alcan Bowling Club). The Civic Head of Ashington, Cllr. Lawrence Henderson, went along to present the winners with their trophy and prizes and is pictured with the winners together with John Slaughter (of Hirst Park Bowling Club) who takes the lead in arranging and organising the competition.
In congratulating the winning pair Cllr. Henderson said ‘It is good to see members from all the bowling clubs coming together for healthy competition at the excellent facilities within Hirst Park. The Town Council is pleased to support the event and we hope it will continue to be a success well into the future’.
John Slaughter added ‘It was a beautiful day with some excellent bowling and as always we thank Ashington Town Council for their continued support’.
Runners-up in this year’s competition were Jacqueline Nelson (Alcan Bowling Club) & Peter Nicholson (Hirst Park Bowling Club).
