Ashington Sea Cadets Donate 500 Trees

Ashington Sea Cadets have donated over 500 trees to Ashington Community Woods.

The Sea Cadets also volunteered to plant some of the trees, and in February of this year they planted trees around the Miners Memorial.

Friends of Ashington Community Woods volunteer, Dough Mitchley explained that "Areas of the woods have been restored after the devastation of Storm Arwen, while other areas are being restored after culling Ash dieback and Oak trees which are being nibbled by deer, as well as any poor specimens of various types that would not flourish.

There are a variety of trees for the main growth, like Sessile Oak, Birch & Elder.  Also, Rowan, Hazel, Crab Apple, for the understory, with Hawthorn and Willow for specific areas”.

As well as the Sea Cadets, volunteers from the Co Op, Scouts and Guides have also helped plant trees in these areas.

In the Autumn 2023, Spring 2024, there are plans to plant over 200 more trees, some of which are currently being raised by the volunteers, consisting of Hazel, Apple, Oak, Sycamore & Horse Chestnut.

Ashington Town Council have also just completed a further three tree planting schemes as part of their Climate Change Action Plan, with a total of an additional 68 trees for the town.

Cllr Pauline Thompson was delighted to see an additional 10 trees planted on Woodhorn Road in the Hirst Ward.
