Local Councillors Discover Hidden Gem at Historic Ashington Veterans and Elders Centre

A recent visit by local councillors has highlighted the remarkable transformation and ongoing vitality of Ashington's historic Veterans and Elders Centre, a community hub that has been serving ex-servicemen and local residents since 1918.

Councillors were given a warm welcome during their visit to the expanding facility, which proudly maintains its connection to the famous Pitmen Painters through the original hut that still forms part of the building complex.

Modern Facilities Meet Historic Heritage

The centre has recently added a smart new conference room that can fit up to 20 people, with plenty of power sockets for laptops and other equipment. The room works well for both meetings and training sessions, and there's tea and refreshments available for anyone who books it.

"The building has such a rich history," noted one of the visiting councillors. "The photographs and paintings throughout the main area provide a fascinating snapshot of Ashington from around 1938, including memories of professional snooker players who competed there."

Thriving Community Activities

The centre shows just how busy and popular it is, putting on everything from live music nights for up to 100 people to the regular bingo sessions that always pack the place. During the councillors' visit, you could already see people getting ready for that evening's activities.

Award-Worthy Gardens Provide Peaceful Retreat

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the centre's gorgeous gardens – a really peaceful spot that feels miles away from the busy town. The councillors were amazed by how beautiful the flowers were and how quiet and relaxing it felt.

The gardens are maintained by dedicated volunteers from the Gardening Club, which also meets at Earth Balance in Bomersund, demonstrating the centre's wider community connections.

Preserving Artistic Traditions

Keeping alive the legacy of the original Pitmen Painters, the centre maintains a vibrant Art Group that continues the building's creative traditions. This group represents one of two main volunteer organizations that keep the centre thriving.

Flexible Membership Options

The centre offers various membership levels to suit different needs and interests:

  • Full membership
  • Associate membership
  • Social membership (including organized excursions to sporting matches)

Perfect for Over-55s Community

With so many different activities, great facilities, and all that history, the centre is perfect for anyone over 55 who wants to get involved, try something creative, or just meet new people in a friendly place.

The councillors' visit concluded with plans to return, testament to the warm welcome and impressive range of facilities and activities on offer at this remarkable community asset.
