Riverside Open Day to Showcase Water Sports and Maritime Activities for Local Community

Family-friendly event offers hands-on experiences with paddleboarding, rowing, and Sea Cadets training
A community open day celebrating water sports and maritime activities will take place on Saturday, 12th July 2025, from 11:00am to 3:00pm at the riverside location featuring the Sea Cadets Building, Rowing Club House, and surrounding grassed areas with river frontage.
The Riverside Open Day aims to introduce local families and young people to the diverse range of water-based activities available in the area, while supporting recruitment efforts for participating organisations.
Event Highlights
Learn-to-Paddle Sessions Wansbeck Paddle Sports Club will offer supervised paddleboarding experiences throughout the day, giving visitors the opportunity to try this popular water sport in a safe, insured environment. Sea Cadets Open House the Sea Cadets will open their building to the public, providing comprehensive information about youth development programs, volunteer opportunities, and staff recruitment. Visitors will witness live demonstrations of training programmes and skills development activities that showcase the valuable experiences available to young people through Sea Cadets membership.
Rowing Club Experience Cambois Rowing Club will welcome visitors to tour their clubhouse facilities, view rowing boats up close, learn about membership opportunities, and try their hand at rowing machines for an authentic taste of the sport.
Community Focus
The event specifically targets young people in the community, offering them engaging pathways into water sports and maritime activities. The Riverside Open Day was initiated by the Youth Advisory Committee of Ashington Town Council, who are funding the provision of food and refreshments for the community event. Cllr Caroline Ball, Chair of the Youth Advisory Committee, commented:
"We're delighted to be supporting this wonderful community event that brings together our local maritime organisations and gives young people the chance to try these exciting water sports activities, on and off the water."
Refreshments will be available throughout the day on the grassed area outside the Sea Cadets building, creating a welcoming atmosphere for families to enjoy while exploring the various activities on offer.
About the Organisations
The event brings together three key maritime organisations: the local the Wansbeck Paddle Sports Club, Sea Cadets unit, and Cambois Rowing Club. Each organisation plays a vital role in providing water sports opportunities and youth development programmes in Ashington and the wider Northumberland community.
The Riverside Open Day represents a collaborative effort to showcase the rich maritime heritage and recreational opportunities available locally, while encouraging new members and volunteers to join these valuable community organisations.
