Town Councillor Election Called for Ashington (Hirst Ward)

Northumberland County Council has announced an election for one Parish Councillor position in Ashington (Hirst Ward).

Nomination Deadline: Friday 19th September 2025 at 4pm

Prospective candidates must hand-deliver their nomination papers to:

  • Elections Office, County Hall, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 2EF
  • Office hours: 9am - 4pm (working days only, excluding bank holidays)

Check that you are eligible to stand.

To be able to stand as a candidate at a parish or town council election, you must:

  • Be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a qualifying EU citizen or an EU citizen with retained rights.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Meet at least one of the following three qualifications:
    • You are and will continue to be, registered as a local government elector for the parish you wish to attend from the day of your nomination onwards.
    • You have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the parish area during the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of the election.
    • Your principal or only place of work during the 12 months before your nomination and the day of the election has been in the parish area.

If you are eligible, you must then follow the steps below:

  1. Obtain nomination papers from the Elections Office during office hours, or download HERE, or collect a copy from the Town Council office.
  2. Complete and return nomination papers by the 4pm deadline on 19th September
  3. Election date: If the election is contested (more than one person is nominated), polling will take place on Thursday 16th October 2025

The Returning Officer will assist electors in preparing nomination papers upon request during the stated office hours.

Hirst Ward Residents wishing to vote must be registered by 30th September 2025. Register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
