Ashington Pride Family Picnic 2025

Ashington Pride Family Picnic 2025

On Saturday 6th September, Ashington came together to celebrate love, diversity, and community at the Pride Family Picnic in Hirst Park, delivered in partnership between Pride Action North and Ashington Town Council.

Running from 12 noon to 3pm, the picnic created a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ people, families, and allies to celebrate together. Despite an unexpected challenge when a car accident temporarily blocked the park entrance, the event still drew 308 attendees — with 258 people actively joining in activities and an impressive 71 young people getting involved.

Highlights of the day included:

  • Creative workshops, live music, and dance sessions

  • Sports and movement activities

  • Entertainment from talented drag artists

  • Popular face painting and hairdressing services

  • Community safety demonstrations

  • Picnic blankets available to borrow from the Pavilion

  • A warm invitation to bring your own picnic or enjoy on-site refreshments

The event also welcomed support from Woodhorn Museum, Specsavers, Mortal Fools, Koast Radio, Curious Arts, Full Circle Food Project, and many more who provided advice, resources, and friendly engagement throughout the afternoon.

Importantly, the event wasn’t just enjoyed by those who came especially for it — people passing through the park also stopped to join in, adding to the sense of inclusivity and community spirit.

This success was made possible thanks to funding from Ashington Town Council and the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with the North East Combined Authority as Lead Authority.

The collaboration between Pride Action North and Ashington Town Council proved highly effective, demonstrating how local government and community organisations can work hand in hand to deliver inclusive, joyful events that meet diverse community needs.

Thanks to LukLuk Film, you can now relive the day in a Pride Action North official event video:

The Pride Family Picnic showed that Ashington has a strong appetite for inclusive celebrations — and we look forward to building on this success in the years to come.
