Community Celebrates the Opening of the Centenary Orchard at Wansbeck Road Allotments

Despite the heavy rain, spirits were high as over 40 people gathered on the afternoon of Saturday 20th September to celebrate the official opening of the new Community Centenary Orchard at Wansbeck Road Allotments.
Special guests included Michelle Brannigan, Amanda Sheldon, and a representative from Real Allotments, who joined allotment members and local residents in braving the weather to mark the occasion.
The orchard project was originally proposed to commemorate the 100 years since the allotments were established in Ashington. After delays during the pandemic, the vision came to life in 2023 when the site, previously derelict and prone to flooding, was transformed into a thriving community orchard.
Fundraising and volunteer efforts have helped make the orchard a welcoming space where members can enjoy and share the benefits of growing, learning, and community spirit. The project has been supported by a number of organisations and individuals, including:
-
Margaret Barber Foundation
Particular thanks were given to Mary Charlton, described as “a force to be reckoned with”, who has been the driving energy behind the orchard’s success. From organising pergola construction, planting, and painting, to restoring tables and benches, Mary’s dedication has been central to the project’s achievements.
Civic Head Cllr Pauline Thompson was invited to officially declare the orchard open, recognising the orchard as not only a commemoration of the allotments’ centenary but also as a space for future generations to enjoy.
Visitors on the day were treated to displays of produce, gardening advice, and refreshments, while members of Climate Action Wansbeck shared insights into their environmental projects.
The orchard will also serve as a gathering space for community events and as a haven for those who can no longer work their own allotments but still wish to enjoy the benefits of gardening and nature.
