Hirst Ward By-Election Result

Following the Hirst Ward By-Election held on Thursday 16th October, Ashington Town Council is pleased to share the official Declaration of Result, with Cllr Sonia Simm duly elected to serve as Town Councillor for Hirst Ward.
- Fox, Melanie Tuesday - 187 votes
- McGregor, Andy - 104 votes
- Peverley, Elaine - 41 votes
- Simm, Sonia - 230 votes (ELECTED)
The turnout was 16.5%
The Council extends its warmest congratulations to Cllr Sonia Simm, who also represents the Haydon Ward on Northumberland County Council, and now joins Ashington Town Council in representing residents of Hirst Ward.
We would also like to express our sincere thanks to all candidates who put themselves forward in this election. Standing for public office takes commitment and courage. At the first tier of local government, Town and Parish Councillors play an important and rewarding role in their communities — working closely with residents, local groups, and partners, and they can make a real difference.
Ashington Town Council looks forward to welcoming Cllr Simm to the team and continuing our shared work for the benefit of Ashington and its residents.

Other Hirst Ward Vacancies
Ashington Town Council currently has two further casual vacancies in the Hirst Ward.

The second vacancy was declared on 29th September 2025, with the deadline to request an election being today, Friday 17th October 2025.

The third vacancy was declared on 14 October 2025.
If elections are called for these vacancies, it is expected that both polls will take place on the same date, in line with the statutory timeframes set out in electoral law.
