Ashington Christmas Market 2025: A Festive Success Despite the Weather
Community spirit shines through as 650 visitors brave the elements for magical celebration at Hirst Park
Despite challenging weather conditions, the Ashington Christmas Market 2025 proved to be a resounding success, bringing together approximately 650 local residents for a day of festive fun, free activities, and community celebration on Sunday 7th December.
Originally planned for Station Road following the Christmas Light Switch-On, the event was relocated to Hirst Park due to stormy weather. In a wonderful example of community collaboration, the market joined forces with Heart of the Hirst's Christmas Fair, creating an even more magical experience for families across Ashington.
A Winter Wonderland in the Park
The combined event transformed Hirst Park into a festive village, with 27 beautifully decorated stalls from local crafters and traders creating a vibrant Christmas atmosphere. Seasonal characters including an Elf, Ice Queen, and Good Fairy delighted children throughout the day, while families enjoyed a wealth of free activities designed to bring the magic of Christmas to all.
Free Family Fun
One of the event's greatest successes was its accessibility, with numerous free activities ensuring that all families could participate regardless of financial circumstances:
- Face painting with festive designs
- Gingerbread decorating workshops
- Letters to Santa station in a charming gingerbread-house gazebo
- "12 Days of Christmas" themed treasure hunt with prizes for all participants
- Visits to Santa's grotto for just £2, with each child receiving a high-quality gift valued between £10-£15
The treasure hunt proved particularly popular, with children of all ages eagerly exploring the park to complete the challenge. Every child who participated received either a selection box or a small toy, ensuring no one went home empty-handed.
Supporting Local Enterprise
The market provided valuable trading opportunities for 27 local crafters and vendors.
"Most of the stallholders had a good day's trading," organisers reported. "The majority of them only have events as an income, so it's really important for them to not only trade locally but to let locals know about their online shops so they can perhaps buy from them throughout the year."
All stallholders embraced the festive spirit, decorating their stalls beautifully to create the atmosphere of a little Christmas village filled with colour, sparkle, and festive cheer.
Community Partnership at Its Best
The event showcased the power of community collaboration, with Money Tree Crafters & Traders working alongside Heart of the Hirst to deliver a seamless celebration. Over 75 local volunteers, coordinators, and participants contributed to making the day special, including:
- Koast Radio providing festive music
- Sandancer Medical offering first aid cover
- Full Circle Food with Adventures with Kelly
- Wansbeck Valley Foodbank
- Local and county councillors
- Numerous community groups and volunteers
"The partnership between Heart of the Hirst and Money Tree Crafters was excellent," noted event organisers. "We supported each other from the beginning to the very end."
Supporting Those in Need
In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, the event raised £200 for Wansbeck Valley Foodbank through a raffle, with local businesses generously donating prizes. Attendees also brought tinned goods to donate, and 30 selection boxes plus a selection of toys were collected for distribution to families facing hardship. County Councillor Caroline Ball kindly transported these items to the foodbank on behalf of the organisers.
Overcoming the Weather
The determination of the organising teams and the resilience of attendees were tested by deteriorating weather conditions.
The fact that approximately 650 people turned out on such a cold, damp, and eventually stormy afternoon demonstrates the strong appetite in Ashington for accessible, family-friendly community events.
A Surprising Venue Success
Feedback from attendees revealed an unexpected benefit of the venue change. Many visitors commented that they preferred Hirst Park to the town centre. Parents particularly appreciated the relaxed atmosphere of the park, where children could play freely and burn off energy in a safe, welcoming environment.
The park's excellent accessibility, including ample parking suitable for all mobility needs, ensured the event was truly inclusive for the entire community.
Looking to the Future
The success of the 2025 Christmas Market has established strong foundations for an annual tradition. Stallholders have already expressed enthusiasm about returning for future events, and visitors commented that they would like to see even more stalls and activities in coming years.
