Exciting New Play Area Coming to North Seaton Colliery, Ashington

Ashington Town Council is pleased to share that work is now underway to create an exciting new play area at North Seaton Colliery, off Links View. The old play equipment is being removed to make way for the new development, which will transform the site into a modern, accessible, and engaging space for children and families.
Following a competitive procurement process, Kompan was appointed as the contractor for this project. The new play area will feature innovative equipment designed to encourage active play and provide a fresh, distinctive experience different from other play spaces in Ashington.
Children and families can look forward to a fantastic range of equipment including a Tipi Carousel with inclusive top brace, a Little Spider Swing with inclusive rope basket seat, an in-ground Jumper trampoline, inclusive sensory and kaleidoscope panels, climbing structures, slides, and much more. The play area has been designed with accessibility at its heart, with wet pour surfacing that is fully accessible for wheelchairs and buggies, allowing everyone to get in and around all equipment to participate in play.
The new equipment also reflects the Council's commitment to sustainability, with Kompan using high levels of recycled materials throughout, including EcoCore panels and EcoYarn made from 95% recycled materials. Key components come with a lifetime warranty, ensuring the play area will serve the community for many years to come.
This project has been made possible through the generous support of several funding partners. The Council would like to thank Northumberland County Council Housing Developer Fund, and Scottish Power Renewables Community Benefit Fund.
Special thanks go to County Councillor Steven Roberts, who separately funded via NCC Members Local Improvement Scheme (MLIS) the construction work to ensure an accessible entry to the play area from Links View, making the facility welcoming for all users.
The Council extends its sincere thanks to everyone who took part in the community consultation, alongside Ward Cllrs Louis Brown, Mark Purvis and Steven Roberts. Your input has been invaluable in shaping the design and ensuring the new play area meets the needs of local families.
Construction is expected to take approximately three weeks. We ask residents to please bear with us during this period and thank everyone in advance for their patience and cooperation while the work is carried out.
An opening event will be planned upon completion of the works. Further details will be announced in due course. Please click on the link below to view a PDF visual presentation of the new play area.
