Ashington Marks International Workers’ Memorial Day with Wreath-Laying Tribute

Ashington came together on Saturday 2nd May to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day 2026, honouring those who have lost their lives, been injured, or suffered illness as a result of their work.
Chair of Ashington Town Council, Cllr Mark Purvis, attended the memorial service and laid a wreath on behalf of the Town Council, paying tribute to workers and families affected by workplace tragedy.
The event brought together members of the trade union and labour movement, alongside local residents, to reflect on the human cost behind workplace incidents and to stand united in the ongoing fight for safer working conditions.
Remembering lives, reinforcing responsibility
International Workers’ Memorial Day is held each year to remember those who have died due to work-related causes. Recent figures underline the continued importance of this message, with 124 workers losing their lives in workplace incidents over the past year, and an estimated 50,000 deaths annually in the UK linked to occupational illness.
Speaking following the service, Cllr Purvis highlighted the importance of both remembrance and action, recognising the lasting impact on families, friends, and communities.
A message that still matters
The day serves not only as a moment of reflection, but also as a call to action, reinforcing the need for stronger protections, safer workplaces, and accountability at every level.
The message at the heart of the event remains clear: everyone deserves to feel safe at work and to return home to their loved ones.
Ashington’s commemoration stands as a reminder of the town’s continued commitment to supporting workers, honouring those lost, and advocating for a safer future for all.
