Community Environmental Projects Across Northumberland Receive Funding Boost – Including Key Investment in Ashington

Grassroots community projects across Northumberland are set to benefit from a major funding boost, with a strong local impact in Ashington.

Northumberland County Council has awarded grants of up to £5,000 to 17 organisations through its Environment and Climate Fund, distributing a total of £50,000 to support sustainable initiatives. The funding will help communities tackle climate change, improve local environments, and contribute to the county’s ambition of becoming net zero by 2040.

Strong focus on Ashington

Among the successful projects is Ashington Town Council, which has secured funding to develop an environmentally friendly, wheelchair-accessible allotment plot. The project will transform an abandoned space into a fully inclusive community growing area, complete with raised beds for fruit and plants.

Alan Bunker, our very own Allotments Officer says "We're absolutely thrilled to be working with Northumberland County Council to bring these accessible growing plots to Ashington. We can't wait to see our community get growing."

The initiative will not only improve access to green space for residents with mobility needs but also create a welcoming community hub focused on sustainability, wellbeing, and local food production.

Ashington is also set to benefit from wider environmental work through Climate Action Wansbeck’s River Wansbeck project, which will introduce community-led water quality monitoring at accessible sites in both Morpeth and Ashington. This will empower local residents to play an active role in protecting their natural environment.

Supporting local action on climate

The funded projects span a wide range of environmental initiatives, including:

  • Enhancing biodiversity through wildlife corridors
  • Supporting active travel and low-carbon transport
  • Improving energy efficiency in community buildings
  • Expanding food-growing and waste reduction schemes
  • Delivering environmental education programmes

Together, these efforts will help reduce emissions, protect natural habitats, and strengthen community resilience across Northumberland.

Council backing for community innovation

John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Environment, Rural and Farming, said:

“It is fantastic to see the council once again supporting these innovative projects.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work going on across the county in protecting and improving our environment. It is all these small changes that add up to bigger impacts.

“I would like to thank all of the groups who bid into the funding and I’m excited to see the benefits these projects bring to local areas.”

A step towards a greener future

The Northumberland Climate and Environment Fund supports the council’s Environment Policy Statement and wider priorities, including delivering value for money, tackling inequalities, and driving sustainable economic growth.

With projects like the Ashington allotment leading the way locally, the funding demonstrates how community-led action can make a tangible difference—creating greener, healthier, and more inclusive spaces for residents now and in the future.
