Rooting for England: Ashington Gets into World Cup Spirit with Floral Show

Ashington Town Council is planting its colours firmly to the mast this summer with a bold red and white floral display across the town's towers and planters — a nod to England's World Cup campaign and a proud tribute to the town's most famous footballing sons.

Vibrant geraniums and million bells in striking red and white will be making their appearance in planters across the town centre this week, chosen to reflect the colours of the England flag. It's a fitting tribute from Ashington — the town that gave the world Jack and Bobby Charlton, two of the greatest names ever to grace a World Cup final.

And the excitement doesn't stop at ground level. To celebrate England's campaign, football-themed projections will be lighting up some of Ashington's most recognisable landmarks throughout the tournament — including the Town Hall Clock Tower, Station Bridge, Ashington Leisure Centre, and the Co-op Building opposite Wetherspoons. The projections will continue for as long as England remain in the competition, so fingers crossed they'll still be lighting up the town all the way to the final on 19th July. Look out for the opening night on Thursday 11th June — and here's hoping there are many more nights to follow.

With planting going in this week, the bank holiday sunshine will give it just the ‘extra time’ it needs to root itself in and look its very best.

Cllr Mark Purvis, Chair of Ashington Town Council said: "Ashington has a unique place in World Cup history, and we wanted to celebrate that with something the whole town can enjoy. We hope the display and the projections bring a real sense of pride and excitement — come on England!"
