Great Big Green Week: A Fantastic Day for Ashington!

Residents embrace climate action as community event draws visitors from across the area

Ashington Town Council is delighted to report that The Great Big Green Week event, held on Tuesday 9th June 2026 at Ashington Market, Station Road, was a resounding success. The event ran from 10am to 2pm and brought together local organisations, residents, and visitors from across the area for a celebration of sustainability, community spirit, and environmental action.

Incredible Community Engagement

We had a truly great day, with every stall seeing wonderful levels of engagement from local residents throughout the event. Citizens Advice Energy Team, Climate Action Wansbeck, Groundwork NE & Cumbria, NCC Climate Change & Warmer Homes Team, the Full Circle Food Project, and Ashington Town Council were all on hand to share advice, showcase green projects, and inspire visitors to take action.

Whilst the event primarily attracted Ashington residents, we were thrilled to welcome a significant number of visitors from Bedlington, Morpeth, Blyth, and Newbiggin. Many visitors commented that the event was a great idea and that they had genuinely benefited from the wealth of information and advice available on the day -- a fantastic testament to the hard work of all our partner organisations.

"It was absolutely wonderful to be out in the market meeting so many residents and visitors on such a fantastic day. The enthusiasm and engagement from the community was truly inspiring — from collecting their free raffle tickets to stopping to find out more about the great work happening right here in Ashington to tackle climate change. Events like this really show what our community is made of, and I am so proud of everything Ashington Town Council and our partners are doing to help make our town a greener, healthier place for everyone."

— Cllr Marjorie Chambers, Ashington Town Council

"It was a really lovely event and a great opportunity to connect with more local people in Ashington. We loved to see so much enthusiasm for growing food at home and interest in learning more about food growing. We hope many of the people we met will come and visit us at the Growing Zone in Hirst Park over the summer."
-- Celia, Full Circle Food Project

Brilliant Green Ideas from Our Community Survey

One of the most exciting aspects of the day was our community survey, which invited residents to share their ideas for small green projects that could benefit Ashington. The response was outstanding, with some truly inspiring suggestions coming forward, including:

  • Community allotments and growing areas
  • Communal composting schemes
  • Greater support and infrastructure for recycling
  • A demonstration allotment to inspire and educate the community
  • An Eco Hub for Ashington
  • A Repair Cafe to reduce waste and extend the life of everyday items

These are just some of the wonderful ideas put forward by our residents to help Ashington tackle climate change. All suggestions will be carefully considered by Ashington Town Council's Climate Change Committee as we continue to develop our green agenda for the town.

If you missed the event and would still like to share your green idea for Ashington, please complete the questionnaire on our website or contact Ashington Town Council directly.  Download questionnaire here, once completed return to admin@ashingtontowncouncil.gov.uk

Thank You!

Together, we are building a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for Ashington.
