Civic Head Visits Ashington Hirst Running Club Following Town Council Grant Support

Ashington's Civic Head, Cllr Caroline Ball, recently visited Ashington Hirst Running Club to learn more about how a £1,355 grant from the Town Council will support the club's activities and community events throughout the year.

Ashington Hirst Running Club has grown to more than 250 members, with runners of all abilities taking part in its regular sessions. Run entirely by volunteers, the club welcomes everyone from beginners in its run-walk group through to experienced runners taking part in effort sessions. Members range in age from 15 to 79, reflecting the club's inclusive approach to promoting health, fitness and wellbeing across the community.

Cllr Ball said " It was a pleasure to visit Ashington Hirst Running Club and see first-hand the incredible community spirit that runs through everything they do. With over 250 members ranging from complete beginners to seasoned runners, this is a club that truly welcomes everyone, and that inclusivity is something to be really proud of. "

The Town Council grant will help fund a range of essential costs, including first aid training for 15 run leaders, medical cover for the club's December race, race prizes, headquarters hire, course equipment and race numbers featuring the Ashington Town Council logo.

During her visit, Cllr Ball met with club members and volunteers, learning more about the work that goes into organising weekly training sessions and community races. She also heard how the club's events not only encourage people to become more active but also raise valuable funds for local causes, including Friends of the Woods and the club's charity fund.

Ashington Hirst Running Club regularly attracts runners from across Northumberland, Tyneside, County Durham and the Scottish Borders to its public races, showcasing Ashington as a welcoming destination for sporting events while supporting the local economy.

Ashington Town Council is proud to support organisations such as Ashington Hirst Running Club through its grant funding programme, helping local groups provide safe, accessible opportunities for residents to improve their physical and mental wellbeing while strengthening community connections.
