Civic Head joins Wildfox Day Nursery children for community litter pick at People’s Park
Ashington's Civic Head, Councillor Caroline Ball, joined children and staff from Wildfox Day Nursery for a community litter pick at People’s Park on Thursday 20 August, helping to promote the importance of caring for the local environment from a young age.
The litter pick was supported by the Ashington Community Litter Pickers project team and Ashington Town Council Neighbourhood Services Officer Ryan Appleby, who helped the children learn about the impact litter can have on their community and the simple steps everyone can take to keep Ashington clean.
Despite their young age, the children enthusiastically took part in the activity, helping to collect litter around the park before enjoying some time playing in the park and taking part in a story session.
The children were also presented with certificates in recognition of their efforts.
Civic Head Councillor Caroline Ball said:
“It was a great morning and the children did a fantastic job. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in looking after their local park.
“Thank you to the staff and parents who attended and supported the activity. The children worked hard and deserved their certificates, as well as some time to enjoy the park and a story afterwards.
“A huge thank you also goes to the Ashington Community Litter Pickers and Ryan from Ashington Town Council for supporting the activity and helping to teach the children how important it is to love where you live and take your litter home.”
Michelle Taylor, Nursery Manager at Wildfox Day Nursery, said:
“Thank you all for today, it was a huge success, and we are really grateful to you all for your time and effort making it work for us.
“We hope to collaborate again soon and continue to educate the next generation on the importance of looking after our world.”
The activity forms part of the ongoing work to encourage residents of all ages to take pride in their surroundings and play a role in keeping Ashington’s parks and public spaces clean and welcoming.
The litter pick also provided an opportunity for the children to learn through practical experience, demonstrating that even small actions can make a positive difference to the community.
