Age UK Northumberland

Age UK Northumberland has launched a new scams prevention and support programme for older people in Northumberland.

The programme, funded by Lloyds Banking Group, will help to prevent older people from falling for scams by increasing their knowledge and confidence to recognise and deal with attempted scams. It will also provide support to older fraud victims recovering after an incident.

Older people can be particularly vulnerable to fraud and scams, which can have a serious emotional and financial impact, and can damage quality of life and wellbeing for many.

Sophisticated scams have been on the rise during the pandemic with criminals devising even more ways to target those they believe to be vulnerable. This means it’s even more vital to support those that may be at greater risk.

Amy Whyte, Head of Charitable Services and Operations at Age UK Northumberland said: “We’re really pleased to be launching the Age UK Scams Prevention and Support Programme across Northumberland. Scams can have a devastating effect on older victims - in England and Wales an older person becomes a victim of fraud every 40 seconds, which is over 800,000 older people every year. This shows us just how important this programme is to try and keep the older people in Northumberland as safe as possible when it comes to financial crime.”

BE YOU Emotional Wellbeing Support

Emotional wellbeing support for parents and carers of children and young people in the trailblazer areas of Ashington, Bedlington, Hexham, Blyth or being home schooled.

Children and Young People have suffered massively due to the pandemic and restrictions which increases the pressure on parents - who are already going through a hard time at the moment, so please spread the word. This is time-limited, the funding is only available to run sessions this year, but hopefully, if the need is there those in charge will see that this sort of help is needed for longer than a year.

Northumberland has been selected as one of 25 Trailblazer areas to develop programmes that improve young people’s mental health and the ‘Be You’ team was created by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust and Northumberland County Council with the aim of offering emotional health and wellbeing support to children, young people and adults giving them access to information and services.  Cygnus Support is part of this bigger team providing mental and emotional support at the earliest signs of needing help.

If you have any questions or want to talk to Amanda please call on 07377265036 or email amandasayers@cygnussupport.com; if you want to read more here’s the link to the Cygnus Be You web page Welcome to Cygnus Support and the NHS Trailblazers Be You web site Homepage | NHS Trailblazers (beyounorthumberland.nhs.uk)

Background information for Ryder Architects
About Us

Cycling4Everyone (North East) limited, is a social enterprise operating as a cycle training provider and active travel advocate aiming to promote and support the increase of safe cycling through Bikeability cycle training (the new cycling proficiency test), bike repairs and teaching cyclists to fix their bikes - keeping cyclists’ bikes safe and bikes in good order. Registering for Companies House in 2019, C4E became a going concern through the Hirst Park Project in 2022.

Background to the Ashington Cycle Hub
During 2020/21 ‘Cycle With Jan’ (Jan Chisholm - C4E director and founder) ran a number of cycle training courses for local residents (particularly for asylum seekers and job seekers). This activity was initially funded by Northumberland County Council and Northumberland County of Sanctuary. Both funders recognised the need and potential for a cycle maintenance service, cycling training and development in Ashington - particularly the Hirst Park area.

Green Social Prescribing

My name is Gem and I am a health and nature lead, working for Natural England.  I am working with Northumberland Wildlife Trust to explore Green Social Prescribing in South East Northumberland.

*Green social prescribing is the practice of supporting people to engage in nature-based interventions and activities to improve their mental and physical health. Green social prescribing includes both what is known as green and blue activities. These could include local walking schemes, community gardening projects, conservation volunteering, green gyms, open water swimming or arts and cultural activities which take place outdoors. These activities may be ‘prescribed’ by link workers (and other trusted professionals) alongside other forms of support, for example, referrals to support for housing or finances – based on the needs and circumstances of each individual.

As part of this project , we are firstly working with Ashington and Blyth and their surrounding areas.

To find out more about Green Social Prescribing visit the National Academy for Social Prescribing here.

Talking Marras

Every Friday 10am to 2pm at The Hirst Welfare Centre, Alexandra Road.

Talking Marra’s has been running since 2018 as a peer support group that was created when another group folded.

We are a group of people who have all suffered with some kind of mental health issues, whether it be anxiety, depression, loneliness or even just boredom.

We meet up to have a coffee/tea and chat with others, we do arts and crafts to sell at our fairs to raise funding for outings etc.

We have our own garden/allotment area where we grow our won salad and vegetables for a bit of gentle exercise and healthy, free eating.

We like to get involved with other groups in the area that might need a helping hand.

We have a private Facebook page where we can keep in contact and offer support to each other.

We play games weekly such as bingo and dominoes where you can win small prizes of chocolates, biscuits and soup.

We ask for a 30p donation for unlimited tea and coffee and 30p per game (normally play 4 per day.  This covers the cost of the prizes).

Why not come along and join in the fun!

Hope to see you soon ????

The Bedlington and District Red Squirrel Group (BADRSG)

The Bedlington and District Red Squirrel Group (BADRSG)

The Bedlington and District Red Squirrel Group (BADRSG) was set up in March 2022 in response to the loss of a number of red squirrels in Gallagher Park through the squirrel pox. The pox is passed to our native red squirrels from grey squirrels imported from the USA in the 1870s. The greys are immune to it but the reds always die once they catch it. The only way to protect and nurture the red squirrels is to manage down the greys. When the group was set up it only operated in Bedlington and Choppington parishes. However, as of January 2024, the group has taken on much of the territory previously managed by the Morpeth Group. This includes all of the woodlands and parks in Ashington.

In the two years that the group has been operating it has seen the return of our native reds to woodlands they had not been seen in for some years. We are now reaching out to the various town and parish councils as well as groups that manage woodland areas to help us recruit additional volunteers and or provide funding for the equipment needed for our work.

Ashington has a number of beautiful woodlands, including Woodhorn, the Wansbeck  Riverside Park and the Ashington Community Woodland (ACW). Red squirrels are still present in some of these woodlands. We need your help to protect them and to help them flourish and spread.

How can you help?

  • Report any sightings of red or grey squirrels, alive or dead through the contact points below.
  • If you regularly walk in any of the Ashington woodlands please volunteer to help us. This will take 1 hour of your time each week and can be done as part of your walk. Most of our volunteers are dog walkers who would be in the woods anyway. Get in touch using the contact details below.
  • If you back onto woodland and have seen grey squirrels in your garden then we can provide a trap to capture them. One of our trained volunteers will come and deal with any greys caught.
  • If you have a squirrel feeder in your garden please remove it. They are the single biggest cause of cross contamination between greys and reds, resulting in the death of the reds.
  • If you are able to donate, to help us with our equipment or running costs that would be greatly appreciated. Please contact us for details of how, or use our GoFundMe page at  https://gofund.me/a53371cb

Please help to save our native red squirrels. This photograph was taken recently and is one of our local red squirrels. As you can see, she is heavily pregnant and will hopefully have 2 or 3 healthy kits shortly.
