Have Your Say – Help Shape the Future of Northumberland

Ashington Town Council is encouraging residents to take part in a new survey being run by Northumberland County Council. The survey asks people what they feel and experience about where they live – what they value, and what they think is missing – all in respect of council services. This is an important opportunity for residents to help shape the County Council’s priorities and budgets for 2026–2029, and to influence the next Corporate Plan 2026–2030.

The survey takes just a few minutes to complete, with ten  questions about what matters most to you.

Allotments

Ashington Town Council took over statutory responsibility for allotment provision within the town in April 2010.

Ashington Town Council currently has responsibility for eight sites with four of these sites being managed on a day to day basis through a range of agreements with Allotment Associations, and four managed directly by the Council

Ashington Town Council is continually working to improve the quality of allotment provision in the town.

Ashington Town Council Managed Sites:

Ashington Town Council oversees 4 allotment sites around Ashington.

  1. Hirst East End Allotment Site

  2. North Seaton Colliery Allotment Site

  3. Nursery Park Allotment Site

  4. Woodhorn Road Allotment Site

If you have any queries regarding Hirst East End, Nursery Park, Woodhorn Road or North Seaton Colliery, please contact our Allotments Officer, Alan Bunker, at alan.bunker@ashingtontowncouncil.gov.uk.

Any queries on waiting lists for North Seaton Colliery, please contact Mr. Peter Jobson at 07557 401 388

Allotment Associations:

The Allotment Associations have responsibility for waiting lists and allocation of tenancies and would also be able to advise on rent levels, site rules and regulations.  Please note that waiting lists for some sites may be long; if you are keen to have an allotment in the town you may wish to contact a number of sites and not necessarily restrict your application to the site nearest your home address.  Anything in relation to waiting lists for the below sites, please make contact with the relevant person. Allotments in Ashington are available to Ashington residents only.

Allotment Fires

The Tenant is responsible for any bonfire lit on the allotment plot and must not leave a fire unattended or left to smoulder.

The Tenant will ensure that;

  • All bonfires are subject to prevailing weather and wind conditions i.e. if there is any risk of smoke causing nuisance to neighbouring residents and properties the bonfire will not be lit.
  • Consideration is always given to neighbouring residents who may be sitting in their garden or drying washing etc. and be prepared to put the bonfire out should the wind change direction whilst burning.
  • All bonfires can only be lit on weekdays, Monday to Friday, and ensure no bonfires whatsoever take place at weekends or on bank holidays.
  • All bonfires should be ‘white smoke’ solely, with the burning of dry garden or green waste in a considerate manner.
  • No household rubbish is to be burnt or anything that would give rise to dark smoke.  Under no circumstances whatsoever should any waste material be brought onto the allotment site to be burnt (including furniture, mattresses, plastic packaging, rubber-based materials, tyres, or anything containing plastic, foam or paint etc).
  • Bonfires should be located away from any trees, fences, footpaths, roadways, and buildings.
  • No fuels or spirits should be used to help light a bonfire.
  • Bonfires should where possible be within a burning bin to keep the fire under control.
  • All bonfires are fully extinguished before the Tenant leaves the site and bonfires should never be left to smoulder.
