Remembrance 2022

Remembering

Ashington Town Council support the Royal British Legion (RBL) in their belief that it is important that Remembrance Day is marked publicly in the life of our community, as it is nationally and internationally, as a day of commemoration and commitment. Also, that it is right to honour all those who have given their lives and those who continue to do so in the service of their country, and to offer continuing strength and comfort to the bereaved families.

Ashington RBL Branch

The Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion is working hard to remain firmly embedded in our community. Ashington Town Council stand beside them, along with Ashington Churches Together, to keep the meaning of Remembrance alive; to fundraise, support and educate.

Fundraising

Ashington has an extremely hard working and active RBL branch who raise funds all year round and lead on Remembrance. In 2020 and 2021 towns and villages across the county marked remembrance differently, remembering at home with restricted services, but still donating in vast amounts. The Ashington Branch raised over £20,000 for the 2020 Poppy Appeal, and over £31,000 for the 2021 Poppy Appeal. This staggering effort is thanks to the generosity and support of the people of Ashington.

Remembrance 2022

Ashington Town Council is supporting the Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion in organising the Parade and Service. Plans for Remembrance 2022 have begun, and we are delighted that a parade through town will make a welcome return. It is our joined hope that Sunday 13th November 2022 will resonate with Remembrance Days of the past. We are seeking a strong contingent of uniformed services, and most importantly need a marching band. If you have any instrumental contacts, please ask them to get in touch. The wonderful Ashington Colliery Band will play at the service, but we would like a band to advance the march.

There are always impressive numbers paying their respects in Ashington on Remembrance Sunday, demonstrating the community spirit and support of the Royal British Legion; it would be wonderful to continue to uphold this in 2022.

March with the Parade

If you are part of a club, organisation or group that wishes to march with the Parade, we would love to hear from you. You do not have to be part of uniformed services to march, any group or organisation is welcome to be part of the Parade. If you are already a firm fixture of the Ashington Remembance Service, having attended many times before, we would still like you to get in touch so we can check we have the correct contact details, and keep in touch as plans progress.

Lay a Poppy Wreath

If you would like to purchase and lay a wreath at the service, please contact the Town Council on (01670) 624520, or email clerk@ashingtontowncouncil.gov.uk. If you usually order your wreath directly from the Ashington Branch of the RBL, you can still do so, but let us know, as we are working with them to ensure all organisations are listed to be read on the day.

A standard wreath with a hollow middle is priced at £20 (class B), and a wreath with solid centre for a badge is priced at £25 (class C). Organisations can insert their own logos and badges, or service badges can be ordered. If you are unsure, just ask. We would like to place an order for wreaths by 7th October so ask that you get in touch asap.

Armistice Day

On Friday 11th November, the actual day of The Armistice, there will be a further commemoration and 2-minutes silence in the Ashington Memorial Garden at 11:00am.  Everyone is encouraged to pay their respects at this time.

The Poppy Launch

Poppies will be on sale in the usual places in Ashington from Saturday 29th October, please support sellers when you are out and about.

If you require any further information about the parade and service please contact the office on the number given.  We especially hope you see you at this year’s Remembrance Service.
