Great Big Green Week a Sustainable Success at Ashington Tuesday Market

Ashington Town Council extends its sincere thanks to all the residents and organisations who participated in the Great Big Green Week event this past Tuesday at the weekly outdoor market on Station Road. The buzzing atmosphere and community enthusiasm for sustainable living was inspiring!

“We’re so grateful to the many fantastic local groups who hosted stalls and shared invaluable information on reducing energy use, increasing recycling and reuse, growing food sustainably, and protecting our regional wildlife and natural habitats,” said Chair of Ashington’s Climate Change Committee, Cllr Sophie Robinson. “The event was a wonderful demonstration of our community’s commitment to taking climate action.”

Speed Monitoring

The Town Council purchased movable Speed Indicator Devices (SID) in 2018 with two aims; firstly, to educate drivers of speed limits and remind them not to speed, and secondly to be able to collect reliable speed data to quantify speeding issues. SIDs have been proven to be effective at enforcing speed limits as many drivers don’t realise, they are going too fast.

The SID displays the speed a driver is driving (up to a limit to discourage people trying to see how high they can go) and a message to slow down. It is mounted on lamp columns or street signs, and we work with Northumberland County Councils Highways to determine suitable locations.
