Ashington Drives Forward Greener Transportation

Ashington Drives Forward Greener Transportation

Ashington Town Council gave their full support at last nights Finance and General Services Committee Meeting for an exciting initiative to bring more public electric vehicle charging stations to our community. This effort is being funded through the national Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) program with the goal of improving access to clean transportation alternatives.

Reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enabling cleaner modes of travel is a key part of Ashington's Climate Change Action Plan. Emissions from vehicles are a major contributor to greenhouse gases and local air pollution. By welcoming new electric charging infrastructure, we are working to overcome barriers and encourage more residents to make the switch to zero-emission vehicles.

The County Council has evaluated potential sites and sought Ashington's feedback on optimal locations for new public charge points. Ideal spots include main streets, shopping areas, parks, and other convenient public sites that would best serve residents who rely on on-street parking. Both faster and slower charging options are under consideration.

Ashington Town Council reviewed the proposed charger locations provided by the County and is pleased to endorse the sites suggested for installation, which include next to Kwik Fit, Woodhorn Road, Second Avenue, Ashington College lay-by, North Seaton Community Centre. These centrally located charging points will provide easy access to electric refuelling for drivers.

Our Council believes proactively developing EV infrastructure today will pay dividends for Ashington tomorrow as electric vehicles become more mainstream. This is just one actionable step Ashington is taking to promote sustainability and deliver on our Climate Change promises to the community. We thank Northumberland County Council for their partnership and look forward to seeing the new public chargers installed in the coming months.
