Campaign Urges Public to #LookCloser at Signs of Child Exploitation in Northumberland

Campaign Urges Public to #LookCloser at Signs of Child Exploitation in Northumberland

A public awareness campaign starts on 4th March and is urging residents of Northumberland to be vigilant about signs of child exploitation related to county lines drug trafficking. The #LookCloser campaign aims to educate the public about how to spot and report potential instances of child criminal and financial exploitation.

County lines involves city-based gangs exploiting children and vulnerable people to transport and sell drugs in smaller towns and rural areas across the country. At the same time, some young people are being manipulated into financially supporting drug operations by having their bank accounts and assets exploited. Northumberland's location near major urban hubs puts local youth at risk of being targeted and coerced into criminal activity.

"We're asking the people of Ashington to help protect our community by learning the warning signs of county lines exploitation and speaking up if they notice anything suspicious," said Council Leader, Cllr John Tully. "It takes an entire community working together to keep our young people safe, if something doesn't feel right, don't wait, report it.”

The #LookCloser campaign provides tips on spotting signs of exploitation, such as children travelling alone to other towns, receiving frequent phone calls or messages, having new unaffordable possessions, and showing other sudden changes in behaviour or wellbeing.

Residents who suspect a young person is being exploited, should contact the police on 101 or 999 if there is an immediate risk. You can also report to the police online. Only report your concerns when it is safe for you to do so, even if this is after the event that your concerns initially arose.  Do not attempt to intervene yourself. If you’re on a train, text the British Transport Police on 61016. Alternatively, you can contact the NSPCC for advice on 0808 800 5000.

By looking closer at what's happening with our young people, we can get them the help they need and prevent tragedies before it's too late.
