The festival serves a dual purpose, not only providing entertainment and sporting competition but also raising funds for two important causes: Alzheimer’s Society and Bright Northumbria Healthcare Charity. While all team places are now fully booked and registration has closed, spectators are warmly welcomed to come along and support the teams throughout the day.
Community Refreshments and Atmosphere
Adding to the festive atmosphere, Caribe Coffee Co will have their electric coffee van positioned on the field, ensuring visitors can stay refreshed throughout the day. Free Access for All
One of the most appealing aspects of the Get Active Family Fun Day is that all activities are completely free of charge. This accessibility ensures that financial barriers don’t prevent families from participating in this community celebration of health, fitness, and togetherness.
The event represents a collaborative effort between numerous local organisations, each contributing their expertise and resources to create a comprehensive day of activities that cater to diverse interests and age groups.
Looking Forward to Community Connection
The Get Active Family Fun Day and Walking Football Festival exemplifies the spirit of community engagement that makes Ashington special. By bringing together sports clubs, health organisations, local businesses, and residents, the event creates opportunities for new connections, skill development, and community pride.
Whether visitors are looking to try a new sport, learn about health and wellbeing resources, support local charities, or simply enjoy a day out with family and friends, the event at Hirst Welfare Centre promises to deliver an enriching experience for all who attend.
The combination of established community organisations and exciting activities ensures that Saturday 2nd August will be a memorable day for Ashington residents, reinforcing the town’s commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles for all ages.

Brought to you with pride by Ashington Town Council
The annual Northumberland Miners’ Picnic will host a solemn Miners’ Memorial Service on Saturday, 14th June 2025, at 10:30am at Woodhorn Museum. The service will pay tribute to the miners who dedicated their lives to Northumberland’s coal mines and remember those who lost their lives in the industry.
The memorial service, led by Ministers of Ashington Churches Together, forms a central part of the Northumberland Miners’ Picnic, a tradition that has celebrated the region’s mining heritage for generations. The service provides an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance of the sacrifices made by miners and their families.
“This memorial service stands as a poignant reminder of our mining heritage and honours all those who worked in the Northumberland Coal Mines,” said Civic Head Cllr Pauline Thompson. “It’s a time for reflection and remembrance as we pay our respects to the miners who shaped our community.”
The service will take place at Woodhorn Museum, located in QEII County Park, Ashington (NE63 9YF), which serves as a fitting venue given its role in preserving and celebrating the area’s industrial heritage.
The Northumberland Miners’ Picnic has a rich history dating back generations, bringing together communities to celebrate mining culture and remember the industry’s impact on the region. The memorial service represents the more reflective aspect of this annual gathering, ensuring that the memory of Northumberland’s miners continues to be honoured.
All members of the public are welcome to attend the memorial service, which offers an important opportunity for both former mining families and the wider community to pay their respects.

The links between Ashington, Newbiggin by the Sea and the Remscheid area in Germany, go back to the 1950’s and the town twinning agreement was one of the first between the United Kingdom and Germany following the Second World War.
In 2015 a new partnership agreement between the town councils of Ashington and Newbiggin by the Sea and the City of Remscheid Council was duly signed by the respective mayors of each area reaffirming these well-established links.
A public exhibition to celebrate these links over the past 70 years will take place on Friday 25 October 2024 from 1.00PM till 3.00PM at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre Church Point Newbiggin by the Sea NE64 6DB
The exhibition will include photographs, memorabilia and a performance by the Ashington Male Voice Choir
We are delighted to welcome our German guests for the event;
Sven Wolf (Regional MP), Sven Wiertz (Stadt Director of City of Remscheid), Christian Gunter (Councillor), Nadine Gaede, (Councillor), Bjorn Gottshalk (City of Remscheid Town Twinning Group)
Come along and find out about town twining and share your memories!
The inaugural Youth Forum meeting promises to be hive of activity, with young voices taking centre stage. It is hoped that ideas will flow as freely as pizza (because what’s a youth gathering without free food, right?). We want our young residents to work up an appetite for civic engagement – and we are willing to feed them to help us get there!
Mark your calendars: The inaugural Youth Forum is set for Wednesday 16th October, at Ashington Football Club on Woodhorn Lane. We’re calling all young people to join us for round of idea-sharing, forward-planning, and yes, free food! Remember, those 13 and over can attend independently, while under-13s need parental consent. Don’t worry, we will have forms at the ready, and you can bring your adult along if you prefer.

Festive Shopfronts Shine for Ashington’s Christmas Window Display Competition
Shops across four popular shopping areas in Ashington are infusing holiday spirit into their window displays for a friendly decoration competition. The contest spans fourteen local businesses on Station Road, Lintonville Terrace, Woodhorn Road and Laburnum Terrace.
Owners have gotten creative with tinsel-trimmed Christmas trees, handmade gingerbread houses, strung fairy lights, and more to catch the eyes of shoppers passing by. Ribbons, bows, poinsettias and evergreen accents adorn the windows. Some displays incorporate winter scenes with faux snow-dusted pines and presents. The Goal is to evoke the festive mood through vibrant colours and unique holiday-themed decor.
The window displays spark cheer in the neighbourhood and highlight local shops ranging from bakeries to boutiques. This past Remembrance Sunday saw hundreds of Ashington residents turn out to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Attendees gathered at the town’s Memorial Garden to pay tribute through a solemn service and wreath laying ceremony.
Those in attendance represented a cross-section of the community, including Deputy Lord Lieutenant Glen McCrory, Civic Head of Ashington Councillor Victor Bridges, Member of Parliament Ian Lavery, members of the Royal British Legion Ashington Branch, and an Honour Guard from Zulu Company 5 Fusiliers.
Also, in attendance to show their respects were Ashington Sea Cadets, Reiverdale Scout Group, 1st Hirst Scout Group, and Ashington Girlguiding Division.
Reverend C.J. Groocock, Royal British Legion Branch Chaplain, and Reverend R. Biddiss, County Chaplain, led the remembrance service. Ashington Colliery Band provided music alongside communal hymns supported by the Ashington Music Society.
Wreaths were respectfully laid by officials and local organizations at the Memorial Gardens’ monument in honour of the fallen. The wreaths serve as symbols of Ashington’s eternal gratitude.
Councillor Bridges said, “It was incredibly moving to see so many pay tribute on this important day. We will never forget those who gave their lives for our freedom.”
While Remembrance Sunday represents a national collective moment of reflection, the large turnout in Ashington shows just how deeply this small community feels bound to honouring those lost in conflict. Sunday’s ceremony provided an opportunity to unite in appreciation of their ultimate sacrifice.
