Health & Wellness Focus Week

Health & Wellness Focus Week

In my community blog this week I will be focusing on health and wellness.  I’ll be highlighting local health and wellness services as well as fitness opportunities available to help you live your best life.

To kick things off, today's article will introduce the community health champions. We'll look at how these individual support services can help residents, from helping manage conditions to motivating people to get active.

The rest of the week will feature spots in Ashington to get fit or find health services you may need. My goal is that after reading this week's content, you'll know about resources to help you improve your physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

The Community Health Champions have continued to grow and make an impact since April 2023. So far, 26 local volunteers have become Champions after completing training to help share health and wellbeing information with others.

The Champions stay up to date through regular newsletters and emails that provide vital information to pass on. Recent news includes:

  • Northumberland wellbeing walks being offered county-wide to get residents active outdoors in their community. The guided walks support both physical and mental health. Wellbeing Walks (ramblers.org.uk)
  • Resources to increase awareness of high blood pressure, including risk factors and preventative lifestyle changes to reduce hypertension. 1 in 4 adults in England have high blood pressure but many are undiagnosed.
  • The introduction of a new healthy lifestyles website that Champions can recommend, featuring tips on topics like getting active, eating healthier, quitting smoking, and boosting mood. Home | Welcome to Health Trainers Northumberland (livingwellnorthumberland.co.uk)

Champions also assist at local events and activities. If you're interested in becoming a Champion and giving back through health education, contact the program at; aimme.boldra@northumberland.gov.uk
