Ashington Marks Armed Forces Day with Thanksgiving Service

Ashington Town Council’s Civic Head, Cllr Caroline Ball, joined civic and military dignitaries this week for the Armed Forces Day Thanksgiving Service, organised by the Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL).

The service was attended by Deputy Lord Lieutenant Julie Cordon and Ian Lavery MP, who laid floral tributes alongside the Civic Head and President of RBL Ashington, Mr Al Vaziri. Ms Cordon was accompanied by her brother, Mr John McConville, Chair of the charity Brainbox. Both spoke with Cllr Ball about the charity’s work supporting children and young people affected by acquired brain injury, and their families, across Ashington and Northumberland. Veterans, members of the public, the Army Cadet Force and Ashington Sea Cadets stood proud throughout a fitting service led by Padre Major (Retired) Philip Gray, MBE, whose address reflected on the origins of the day. He noted that what is now Armed Forces Day began life in 2006 as Veterans’ Day, introduced at a time when British troops were heavily committed in Iraq and Afghanistan and investment in, and recognition of, the Armed Forces was widely felt to be low. The day was created, the Padre explained, to motivate troops serving at the time by showing them that the nation stood behind them — a message that resonates as strongly today as it did at its inception. The observance was renamed Armed Forces Day in 2009.

Ashington Town Council is continually working to improve the quality of allotment provision in the town. Allotments in Ashington are available to Ashington residents only.

Allotment Associations

Waiting lists for some sites may be long — if you are keen to get an allotment you may wish to contact more than one site rather than restricting your application to the nearest site to your home.

Allotment Fires

The Tenant is responsible for any bonfire lit on their allotment plot and must not leave a fire unattended or smouldering. The following rules apply to all allotment fires:

  • Bonfires must only be lit if weather and wind conditions are safe — do not light a fire if there is any risk of smoke causing a nuisance to neighbouring residents or properties.
  • Be considerate to neighbouring residents who may be in their garden or drying washing, and be prepared to extinguish the fire if the wind changes direction.
  • Bonfires may only be lit on weekdays (Monday to Friday). No bonfires are permitted at weekends or on bank holidays.
  • Only dry garden or green waste may be burned, producing white smoke only.
  • No household rubbish may be burned. Under no circumstances should any waste material be brought onto the allotment site to be burned — this includes furniture, mattresses, plastic packaging, rubber-based materials, tyres, or anything containing plastic, foam, or paint.
  • Bonfires must be located away from trees, fences, footpaths, roadways, and buildings.
  • No fuels or spirits should be used to help light a bonfire.
  • Where possible, bonfires should be within a burning bin to keep the fire under control.
  • All bonfires must be fully extinguished before leaving the site. Fires must never be left to smoulder.
