Ashington Town Council is thrilled see the fun and efforts of a community-focused bird box initiative, spearheaded by our dedicated Neighbourhood Services Officers, Mark, and Ryan. This initiative has seen the creation of hundreds of handmade bird boxes, designed to provide safe nesting spaces for local birdlife and encourage environmental stewardship within our community.

The links between Ashington, Newbiggin by the Sea and the Remscheid area in Germany, go back to the 1950’s.  The town twinning agreement was one of the first between the United Kingdom and Germany following the Second World War.

The Wildlife Trust recently set up shop on Ashington Main Street, offering a variety of nature-focused activities for local residents. Passersby had the opportunity to learn about small plants native to the area and engage in lively discussions about the diverse flora and fauna found in and around Ashington.

Ashington Town Council has formally voted to support a nationwide campaign seeking to improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and e-scooters. The decision was made at the recent Climate Change and Environment Committee meeting held on 30th July.

The council is backing the Battery Safety Campaign led by consumer safety charity Electrical Safety First, which calls for the introduction of new legislation to tackle the growing issue of lithium-ion battery fires. These incidents have become a significant safety concern across the UK, with 11 people losing their lives to fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters last year, and hundreds more injured.

Cllr Caroline Ball, Civic Head of Ashington, recently presented a cheque to Ashington Hirst Running Club as part of the Town Council’s annual grant award program.

Ashington’s Hirst Welfare Centre buzzed with excitement last Saturday as the Family Fun Day and Walking Football Festival drew crowds of local residents and visitors.

Ashington Town Council is pleased to share comprehensive information regarding tree management in our community, following inquiries from concerned residents and Cllrs. In response to questions about tree removals in various areas of Ashington, the Town Council has taken proactive steps to gather accurate information from both Northumberland County Council (NCC) and Bernicia.

We encourage residents to stay informed and engaged with local environmental initiatives. The Town Council remains dedicated to acting on residents’ concerns, seeking accurate information from the appropriate sources, and working with our partners to ensure Ashington remains a green and vibrant place to live.

In a recent meeting held on 30th July, 2024, Ashington Town Council has announced changes to the leadership of its Climate Change and Environment Committee.

Last night’s Full Council meeting proved to be a game-changer for young people in our town. Ashington Town Council has committed to turning youth ideas into reality, backing them with substantial funding and support.

Ashington residents are in for a treat this August as the Tuesday Market on Station Road transforms into a hub of summer activities for all ages.
