Cllr Michelle Brannigan - sowing the seeds of success

Leader of Ashington Town Council, Cllr John Tully expressed congratulations and pride on the achievements of Cllr Michelle Brannigan who has been awarded a scholarship as part of Santander Universities Scholarship Programme.

The programme is aimed at breaking down barriers for current students who are most likely to face challenges when attending higher education. The initiative provides funding to support students through to graduation, £10,000 per year, alongside training opportunities to develop their potential. There are 100 scholarships available to help students build brighter futures, and Cllr Michelle Brannigan was successful out of 3,500 applicants.

Cllr Brannigan is studying Agricultural Business Management at Newcastle University.

Cllr John Tully said,

“I want to recognise and celebrate Michelle’s achievements, not only as a woman in the agricultural sector, but as an Ashington resident who has gone out there to better herself, in regards her career and her community. I hope Michelle’s achievements inspire others in the town to realise their full potential. Michelle is a mature student, so it goes to show it is never too late.”

“Women make up only 28% of the agricultural workforce in the United Kingdom, so Michelle is bucking the trend. We expect her knowledge and learning will reap rewards on the Council’s Climate Change Committee.”
