Ashington Civic Head Travels on the Northumberland Rail Line

Ashington Civic Head Travels on the Northumberland Rail Line

A special train journey, along the new Northumberland passenger rail line, took place today (21st February).

Work on the Northumberland Rail Line commenced in 2022 and includes six new stations, 18 miles of upgraded track as well as new signalling.

The line is planned to open later this year, providing a half hourly passenger service between Ashington and Newcastle Central Station.  The service will stop at Bedlington Station, Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval and Northumberland Park along the way.

The line aims to stimulate and support economic growth, regeneration and community development in Northumberland, providing new and improved transport links for local people and businesses.

Ashington Civic Head, Cllr. Victor Bridges (in the photograph) was invited aboard the train for the journey and said ‘It was good to see the work in progress and although the train did not make it all the way to Ashington, due to the signalling works taking place, you can see the scale of the project.  The Town Council has pressed for the line, over a number of years, and it is good to finally see the end in sight.  The line will hopefully bring many benefits to Ashington with access to work opportunities as well as encouraging visitors to the town.’

The new rail line will reduce congestion and improve air quality on key corridors in Northumberland by moving people away from car travel and onto public transport.
