New Speed Devices in Ashington

New Speed Devices in Ashington

Ashington Town Council commenced a programme of placing Speed Indicator Device (SID) around the town, in 2018, following residents expressing concerns of drivers using excessive speed.

Two further devices have recently been added on the A197 entrance and at Briardene. This brings the total number of SIDs in Ashington to 15, with priority placing close to schools and entrances into the town.  The two new SIDs have been supported by County Councillors Brian Gallacher and Lynne Grimshaw working with Town Councillors.  In the photograph is Cllr. Gallacher with the new SID at Briardene.

The SIDs have been proven to be effective at enforcing speed limits as many drivers don’t realise, they are going too fast.  Unsurprisingly, the faster a car is travelling, the longer it takes to stop.  Travelling at 40mph rather than 30mph means it will take an extra 13 metres (more than three car lengths) to come to a stop.  A pedestrian hit at 30mph has a one in five chance of being killed and this rises significantly to a one in three if they are hit at 35mph (from Brake).

Ashington Town Council works closely with Northumberland County Council in determining suitable locations for the devices.  For more information on SIDs in Ashington visit Ashington Town Council - Speed Monitoring
