Great Big Green Week a Sustainable Success at Ashington Tuesday Market
Ashington Town Council extends its sincere thanks to all the residents and organisations who participated in the Great Big Green Week event this past Tuesday at the weekly outdoor market on Station Road. The buzzing atmosphere and community enthusiasm for sustainable living was inspiring!
"We're so grateful to the many fantastic local groups who hosted stalls and shared invaluable information on reducing energy use, increasing recycling and reuse, growing food sustainably, and protecting our regional wildlife and natural habitats," said Chair of Ashington’s Climate Change Committee, Cllr Sophie Robinson. "The event was a wonderful demonstration of our community's commitment to taking climate action."
Visitors had the chance to enter raffles for eco-friendly prizes bought by the Town Council, including:
12 winners of bird boxes made by our NSO’s Mark and Ryan, 6 winners of energy monitors, 2 air fryers, a slow cooker, a reconditioned unisex cycle, a composter, and a water butt.
CEO of Full Circle Food Project, Michelle Brannigan said, “The event was a great way to raise awareness about climate change, our organisation provided plants which was a huge talking point as many resident's allotments and gardens have suffered due to the extraordinary amount of rain we have seen over the past few months. Residents in Ashington are definitely feeling the effect of the weather change and are keener to do all they can to protect the planet, through sustainable planting or reducing food waste.”
While Great Big Green Week may soon be over, Ashington Town Council underscores that protecting our planet requires sustained, community-wide effort. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to www.ashingtontowncouncil.gov.uk and follow the participating groups' channels for upcoming environmental projects, resources and ways to get involved year-round.
