Ashington Town Council Backs Youth Ideas with Action and Funding

Ashington Town Council Backs Youth Ideas with Action and Funding

Last night's Full Council meeting proved to be a game-changer for young people in our town. Ashington Town Council has committed to turning youth ideas into reality, backing them with substantial funding and support.

Youth Forum Leads the Way

The inaugural Youth Forum meeting promises to be hive of activity, with young voices taking centre stage. It is hoped that ideas will flow as freely as  pizza (because what's a youth gathering without free food, right?). We want our young residents to work up an appetite for civic engagement – and we are willing to feed them to help us get there!

Mark your calendars: The inaugural Youth Forum is set for Wednesday 16th October, at Ashington Football Club on Woodhorn Lane. We're calling all young people to join us for round of idea-sharing, forward-planning, and yes, free food! Remember, those 13 and over can attend independently, while under-13s need parental consent. Don't worry, we will have forms at the ready, and you can bring your adult along if you prefer.

Summer Market Madness: £2,000 for Youth Activities

One of the standout ideas from our Youth Advisory Committee was to liven up the Tuesday Market during the summer holidays. Thanks to Northumberland County Council we have a couple of free stalls for the duration. The Town Council supported this initiative with £2,000 allocated to support youth activities at the market. The first activity was provided on Tuesday 30th, at no cost, by Pride Action North, which you can read more about here.

On Tuesday 6th August, the Northumberland Wildlife Trust will kick off the festivities with a nature-themed day. From 10am to 2pm, visitors can participate in a consultation about local green spaces and enjoy a hands-on activity where children can make paper pots and plant seeds to take home.

The following week, on 13th August, Mortals Fools will take centre stage, offering fun creative crafts for marketgoers, again from 10am until 2pm. This event is sure to spark imagination and creativity among attendees of all ages.

The excitement continues on 20th August with  BREAK.NE bringing their high-energy break-dancing sessions to Station Road. Children aged 7 and above can join in the action at three different time slots: 11 am, 12 pm, and 1 pm, each session lasting 45 minutes.

While the entertainment for 27th August remains a mystery, the town council promises it will be worth the wait, encouraging residents to "watch this space" for upcoming announcements.

These summer activities are part of the regular Tuesday Market, which runs from 9am each week. The initiative aims to bring the community together and offer engaging experiences for families during the school holidays.

Holiday Engagement: £6,000 for October and Christmas Activities

There's more! The Council has delegated £6,000 to the Youth Advisory Committee for youth engagement activities during the October and Christmas holidays.

Councillor Caroline Ball, Chair of the Youth Advisory Committee, commented: “The message from the Town Council is clear: we want to engage with young people directly. No more adults guessing what youth want – we're handing over the mic to let young voices lead the way.”
