Safety advice released with Northumberland Line at its busiest in 60 years
Residents living near the newly upgraded Northumberland Line are being urged to exercise caution as the route becomes significantly busier. Driver training has now begun, meaning more frequent and faster trains are running on the line than at any point in the last 60 years.
"Safety is our number one priority," said Paul Bennett, Network Rail's North and East route head of safety, health and environment. "The trains running along the route are faster and more frequent, so it's vital that level crossing users stop, look and listen, and check both ways before crossing." In recent weeks, Network Rail's community safety teams have been visiting local schools to educate students about the dangers of the railway and the risks of trespassing.
Jason Wade, regional director for Northern, echoed the safety concerns, stating "We're urging everyone in the area to take extra care when they are using one of the level crossings to avoid putting themselves in danger and ensure they do not trespass on this busy railway line." With passenger services set to launch in December 2024 as part of the £298.5m Northumberland Line project, local leaders are stressing the importance of heeding safety warnings to prevent accidents and delays.
To use level crossings safely, people should:
- Concentrate – it’s easy to get distracted, especially by phones, music and conversation.
- Always follow signs and instructions displayed at level crossings.
- Check both ways before crossing – if there is a train coming, don’t cross.
- Understand the warnings which alert when a train approaching (lights, barriers, alarms).
- Cross quickly, keeping children close and dogs on a lead.
