Ashington Set to Host Inaugural ECO Fair with Sustainable Solutions and Local Talent

Ashington Town Council has announced the launch of the town's first-ever ECO Fair, scheduled for Friday 25th April from 10am to 3pm at the Ashington Hirst Welfare Centre. This groundbreaking event aims to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable solutions throughout the community.
Visitors can look forward to an impressive array of exhibits and activities from over 20 local organisations committed to environmental conservation and education. The fair will showcase everything from practical energy-saving tips to creative recycling workshops, designed to inspire residents of all ages to adopt more eco-friendly lifestyles.
"We're bringing together local expertise and enthusiasm to help our community take meaningful action against climate change," said Sharon Parmley, Communications and Engagement Officer for Ashington Town Council. "The ECO Fair represents the councils commitment to building a more sustainable future for Ashington."
The event will feature a free raffle with prizes including Ninja Air Fryers, Russell Hobbs Slow Cookers, and Water Butts. Practical workshops include a "Dr. Bike" service from Cycle4Everyone offering free bicycle repairs, bird house making with Friends of Ashington Community Woods, and wildflower seed bomb creation with Northumberland Wildlife Trust.
Environmental artist James Brunt will lead an outdoor art workshop, while the Ashington WI will offer clothing repairs and demonstrate how to craft bags from recycled jeans. For those interested in energy conservation, Citizens Advice Energy Team will provide guidance on reducing utility bills, and Northumberland County Council will present information on low-carbon heating solutions.
The day will be enriched with a lineup of local musical talent, featuring performances by Liam Carr, Trey Jackson, Charlie Whyte, Jo McGarry, and Daniel Burnett, thanks to Guerilla PA and Event Hire. Educational talks will include Doug Mitchley's presentation on conserving energy at 10:30am and Dr. Wendy Fail's discussion on waste management across the North East at 1:15pm.
A Local Produce Market will showcase sustainable products from regional vendors, including honey from local beekeepers, handcrafted items from recycled materials, and eco-friendly home goods.
This community-based event comes as part of Ashington Town Council's broader environmental initiatives, which include a poster competition for schools launched on World Earth Day last year, promoting climate change awareness among young people.
The ECO Fair is free to attend and open to all Ashington residents interested in learning more about environmental conservation and sustainable living practices in their community.
