Highways Gully Maintenance Programme Begins in Ashington

Ashington Town Council welcomes Northumberland County Council’s commitment to a dedicated 22-week programme to clean and maintain highway gullies across the town. From Monday to Thursday each week (weather permitting*), NCC Highways teams will be working systematically through Ashington’s streets to improve drainage capacity and strengthen the resilience of the highway network.

This proactive, town-wide approach will help mitigate localised flooding, reduce standing water on the roads during heavy rainfall, and prevent small blockages from escalating into more serious issues. It also supports safer road conditions during the winter months, when persistent rain places greater pressure on drainage systems. NCC Highways have a structured plan to catch up on outstanding gully maintenance and restore routine cycles of cleansing across the county.

Residents may, at times, be asked to move parked cars to allow access to gullies. Ashington Town Council kindly asks for support wherever possible, as clear access enables Highways teams to work efficiently and deliver the maximum benefit for the community.

Play Areas

Ashington Town Council has responsibility for matters relating to the provision of some play areas in the town.

Northumberland County Council remains responsible for the provision and maintenance of play areas in the town’s strategic parks at Hirst Park and Wansbeck Riverside Park.

Those play areas that are managed and maintained by Ashington own Council are in the following locations:

  • Aintree Close
  • Alexandra Road
  • Epsom Drive
  • North Seaton Colliery
  • Paddock Wood
  • Peoples Park
  • Seaton Vale

These play areas are regularly inspected by Northumberland County Council and maintained by Ashington Town Council.  The Town Council's Neighbourhood Services Officer carries out repairs and maintenance which includes a rolling programme of improvements.

In 2019 the Town Council developed a significant play facility and outside gym at Peoples Park. The Town Council committed funds and secured external funding to develop the £210,000 project. The Town Council has also recently supported Northumberland County Council’s multi-million-pound scheme to restore Hirst Park which includes new play facilities.

To report an issue with any of the play areas listed under the responsibility of Ashington Town Council, please Contact Us.

Please note that any issue with the play areas in the town's strategic parks (at Hirst Park and Wansbeck Riverside Park) should be directed to Northumberland County Council.
