Speed Monitoring
Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs)
The Town Council purchased movable Speed Indicator Devices in 2018 with two aims: to educate drivers about speed limits and remind them not to speed, and to collect reliable speed data to quantify speeding issues. SIDs have proven effective at encouraging compliance, as many drivers are unaware they are exceeding the limit.
The SID displays the speed a driver is travelling (up to a set limit, to discourage deliberate speeding) alongside a prompt to slow down. Devices are mounted on lamp columns or street signs, and we work with Northumberland County Council's Highways team to determine suitable locations.
To report a speeding concern in your area, please Contact Us and we will consider it for future SID deployment.
Public Seating
Public Seats Across the Town
Ashington Town Council has responsibility for all matters relating to the provision of public seating in the town. Our Neighbourhood Services Officer regularly inspects public seats and carries out repairs and maintenance.
The Town Council operates a rolling programme to replace ageing seating that is beyond repair, as well as providing new seats at new locations. Requests for new or replacement seats are considered in order of priority.
Public seating at the town's strategic parks is provided by Northumberland County Council, not Ashington Town Council.

Play Areas
In 2019, the Town Council developed a significant play facility and outdoor gym at Peoples Park, committing funds and securing external funding for the £210,000 project. The Town Council has also supported Northumberland County Council's multi-million-pound scheme to restore Hirst Park, which includes new play facilities.

- Alexandra Road
- Epsom Drive
- North Seaton Colliery
- Paddock Wood
- Peoples Park
- Seaton Vale

Litter Bins
Litter Bin Provision & Replacement
Ashington Town Council is responsible for the provision of litter bins across the town. Northumberland County Council remains responsible for emptying bins.
The Town Council operates a programme of replacing ageing litter bins beyond repair and providing new bins at new locations. We are aware that Ashington is currently at capacity with litter bins and are approaching provision more strategically — recognising that additional bins are not always the solution, and that encouraging behavioural change is equally important.
Replacement bins will be considered in order of priority. New bin requests will be received and considered in consultation with Northumberland County Council.

The Town Council's Neighbourhood Services Officer regularly inspects the bus shelters in the town and carries out repairs and maintenance using Ashington based businesses where possible.
The Town Council has a programme of replacing ageing shelters which are beyond repair as well as providing shelters at new locations.
Requests for new or replacement shelters are being met in order of priority. Please note that presently it is taking longer than expected to replace glazed panels, but rest assured this is in hand.
