With summer in full swing, it can be tempting (and easy!) to buy single-use plastics. But there are ways we can make the most of summer without impacting the planet

Members of Ashington Rugby Cricket Club were delighted that the Town Council agreed a £2,000 Grant for the club, used to purchase a new mobile cricket cage.

As we all look forward to some much-needed rest and rejuvenation over the summer, it seemed like a good time to reflect on the productive months passed since we welcomed 2022.

Ashington Town Council has had a busy seven months, with lots to celebrate and even more to look forward to. What we as a Council describe as projects, actions, and initiatives, happen in addition to the normal work of the Council.

A level crossing over part of the Northumberland Line could close after the council responded to residents’ concerns. 

The Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion is working hard to become firmly embedded into our community. Ashington Town Council stand beside them, along with Ashington Churches Together, to keep the meaning of Remembrance alive; to fundraise, support and educate.

Ashington has an extremely hard working and active RBL branch who raise funds all year round and lead on Remembrance. In 2020 and 2021 towns and villages across the county marked remembrance differently, remembering at home with restricted services, but still donating in vast amounts.

The Ashington Branch raised over £20,000 for the 2020 Poppy Appeal, and over £31,000 for the 2021 Poppy Appeal. This staggering effort is thanks to the generosity and support of the people of Ashington.

In 2022, it is the hope of the Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion, supported by Ashington Town Council and Ashington Churches Together, that Sunday 13th November will resonate with Remembrance Days of the past. A parade through the town will make a very welcome return.

Ashington Division Girl Guides received a much appreciated £250 from Ashington Town Council’s Queens Platinum Jubilee Fund.  The funding was to help support costs for tree planting and a Jubilee Activity Fun Day.

The funding, from the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) aims to re-energise struggling shopping areas devastated by the Covid pandemic, the shift to online retail and the cost of living crisis.
